 In modern times, the explosion of scientific and technical information, the trend of globalization, integration among the countries pose an important task for our country's education sector. Language has always been a serious barrier to cooperation and the acquisition of technological and cultural advances among nations. Many countries are using English as the national language, English has been chosen as the international language.

Subsequently the Ministry of Education and Training has launched English in Vietnam's education program from Primary Level. However, the ability of Vietnamese students to communicate in English has not been mastered, and is not comparable to the level achieved in other subjects. The plan is to create a suitable communication environment for students to learn foreign languages.

But classroom time is limited so the implementation of the extracurricular course will generate interest in subject and reinforce the knowledge in the classroom and create a more relaxed environment to communicate is very useful to overcome these difficulties. In order to improve the effectiveness of teaching English in high schools and training communication skills to students, I chose the topic: “LEARNING ENGLISH MORE EFFECTIVELY THROUGH EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES "

1: INTRODUCTION
1. Reasons for choosing the research 
      In modern times, the explosion of scientific and technical information, the trend of globalization, integration among the countries pose an important task for our country's education sector. Language has always been a serious barrier to cooperation and the acquisition of technological and cultural advances among nations. Many countries are using English as the national language, English has been chosen as the international language. 
Subsequently the Ministry of Education and Training has launched English in Vietnam's education program from Primary Level. However, the ability of Vietnamese students to communicate in English has not been mastered, and is not comparable to the level achieved in other subjects. The plan is to create a suitable communication environment for students to learn foreign languages.

2. Aims:
What they like the most in the classroom is that they routinely use English communication in a variety of situations right in the classroom for students to think well and reflect quickly. The enthusiasm of the teachers plus the interesting topics help students overcome the barriers in both psychology and language so that the atmosphere is always exciting.
  "The lessons are very interesting, the lively extra-curricular activities make students excited to learn English. After the course, they do not only speak English fluently, listen well, read standard and write the right style, but they are also much more confident in communicating with each other.   Extracurricular activities are a great opportunity for students to practice English in real life, as well as an opportunity for teachers to see each student's ability in the classroom".  
- To set up a process for organizing of extracurricular activities

3.Targets:
- To study documents related to methods of extra-curricular activities
- To study documents, facilities server for extra-curricular activities
- To analyse contents, knowledge of English program in grades 10 -11 -12 thereby determining the contents of extra-curricular activities.
4. Subjects of Research
	- The Basic and in-depth knowledge of "language skills" in English 10 -11-12
	- The Documents about extra-curricular activities in learning, communication skills development, thinking development, and enhancement of subject knowledge as well as society.
	- The methods to design of curricular activities in teaching and learning bout reading, listening, speaking, grammar in English grade 10, 11 and 12.
5. Research Method
5.1 . Experimental methods of pedagogy
- High school textbooks
- To use the chat form with teachers and students to investigate teaching and learning to excite for high school students as well as the form of extra-curricular activities.
- To conduct relevant documents for the ratiocinate and practical basis for the research.
- To get information on books, newspapers, internet ...
5.2. Purpose
	The aims of Experimental pedagogy is to examin, evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of organizing extra-curricular activities in English subjects in teaching and learning English in general level, from which to draw up appropriate correction methods to promote the effect of extracurricular activities.
5.3. Preparration
	- To submit contents of extra-curricular activities for instructors to review it.
	- To get permission from the school and high school teachers about the experiment.
5.4 Objects:
	- I chose two classes in grade 11 are: 11a5 and 11a2 Cam Thuy N1 High School. 
5.5. Contents
- I have conducted three extracurricular activities based on knowledge in the standard program with the same content.
- The experimental subjects were divided into two groups: the experimental group is 11a3,11a9 and the control group is 11a2,11a5.
- The experimental group: When teaching experiment using extracurricular activities to consolidate knowledge, check old lesson for students.
- The control group: When teaching control not using extracurricular activities but only use general questions to consolidate, check old lesson.
- After teaching each lesson, students will be checked the quality of their knowledge memory and ability to apply the knowledge of students of both groups to the same topic. Then to get point, compare and analyze the results between the experimental and control groups.
2: CONTENTS
1. Theoretical basis of the research
1.1. Learn about “Extracurricular activities”
            In order to improve the quality of teaching subjects, recently, on research forums, conferences, seminars, people have discussed many issues of innovation teaching methods. The pressing concern for those who teach directly at high school is how to promote creativity of students, improve the effectiveness of aesthetic education, stimulate passion and interest in subject in the present situation.
      In order to solve the above situation, it needs to innovative combination teaching methods both school time and extra-curricular activities, which first of all is to have a right concept of the importance and significance of the extracurricular activities.
Extra-curricular activities in the concept of teaching methodology innovation is a positive, useful and effective self-study method that links the teaching platform with the realities of life, extends and last the reflection, assessment of the lesson for student, to promote positive, active, creativity of the learner, rechecking the quality of teaching during the main course. Extra-curricular activities, therefore, is educational activities as aesthetic activities, "Contributing to create the cultural lifestyle and the ability to enjoy art and culture to students. Through extracurricular activities, students are developing to balance intellectual, moral, aesthetic and beauty" (Phan Trong Luan, Teaching method. National University Publishing House, 1996, Page.381)
1.2. The effectevenness of extra-curricular activities.
     Through outdoor games and group discussions, students will be taught leadership skills, including vision and target identification skills, team motivation, project planning, and have the patience to overcome the challenge.  The more importanace, your sharing sessions on how to pursue and create extracurricular activities will help students after the shaping program to start their own activities from where.  
        Therefore, parents or students may be able to find extracurricular activities, if cannot meet the above factors, it is difficult for students to become "special" to their abilities.
        Monitoring the innovation process of teaching methods at high schools in recent years, the content of innovation often focuses on the school time, and the extra-curricular mode is less focused implementation.  Is it reasonable that extra-curricular activitices of the students is unimportant, does not play a role in improving the quality of teaching and studying of subject?   It is time to redefine the role and position of extra-curricular activities, to highly promote creativity, interest of student.
1.3.  Theoretical basis
	Foreign language is one of the linguistic skills in the process of communication. It's like the Vietnamese language learning skill as a child, since language is learned through listening if speech. Learning from the textbook for a whole school year will make students bored with pressure. When teaching textbook content, teachers often have to logically order the contents of the curriculum, order in accordance with the regulations of the Ministry of Education; Teaching and learning among teacher and students is repeated actions throughout a school year. To create a new atmosphere, a new space, we have to change the space and time for the students, so that they have the opportunity to relax thought, escape the pressure of learning. That is why I have boldly created some extracurricular lessons in a term. Extracurricular lesson is active by teachers in time, space for students, depending on the location of the school. Moreover, when participating in extra-curricular activities will help students more aggressive, bolder. Just doing two to three times in a term also gives them an interest in learning English, giving them the opportunity to apply what they have learned in class. Therefore, when teaching foreign languages, in addition to the general techniques applied to the skills of understand, teachers also need to have specific methods for the extracurricular activities of students.
In order to have a quality extracurricular activity, teachers need to perform the following basic methods:

 2. 1. Advantages             
   	With the current technological development era, children are increasingly exposed to mass media. The Ministry of Education has organized many competitions on a national scale as: English competition on the nation-wide Internet (The Internet's competition), knowledge around us - grade school has made an useful attractive platform to help them more and more interest in this subject.
	Enthusiastic teachers in the educational career of teaching, always research finding innovative teaching methods with positive and suitable for level, thinking of the students.
My school is in Cam Thuy district. It is a mountainous area, but most of my students are interested in learning English. Especially when they take part in extra-curricular activities .It makes them study English more effectively and they can feel confident when speaking English in front of others.
2.2 Disadvantages 
 	Our students have not found a practical meaning of Foreign Languages. That is why they feel foreign language is not important, so they don't need to try and over the time, too much concentration of knowledge leads to thought: "English is a difficult subject ". Understanding this concern, It is our teachers who are the modifiers, orienting them to let them correct, and timely supplement the gaps of knowledge. To do that, I applied some extra-curricular activities to promote the spirit that inspires students in English subject.
     	Teachers often do not follow the methods of the English subject, due to some reasons such as the facilities in some school are lacking, not the same, do not have tapes or audio tapes are poor quality, lack of socketst in class, listening and speaking skill are not tested at the end of period, last year.
      	The nature of the extracurricular activities is needed to have time, large space, the instruments for learning .Thus, some schools do not have time, space, instruments, only had to say "No" to the extracurricular activities. There are still many schools have despised extracurricular activities, only focused on learning the culture of the students. Some school organized the sketchy extracurricular activities.
 3. Clearly defined for students to understand the extra-curricular learning of English subjects.
 - Why learning English is a difficult task? When students are taught by the teacher, they are used to learning grammar to do exercises. In addition, teachers emphasize language expression through exercises, so it is difficult to change the habit of learning the language. Therefore learning foreign languages ​​becomes more difficult. When studying, students face the following difficulties:
- Can not control his own language volume.
- To enhance the reading and writing skills for examinactions.
- The lesson has many new words, lazy to study.
- Do not pay attention to pronunciation, intonation, tone.
- Students do not often listen and speak and they will not recognize the words they know.
   - So how to help them expand the scope of their study of foreign languages, so that an English lesson is relaxed and enjoyable. That's what many teachers are worried about?
     - May students feel embarrassed to speak English or not? because of bad pronounce? Or have many grammatical mistakes when speaking?
Do they have difficulty when trying to understand native speakers? Or have you felt frustrated because you can not understand the language of the characters in the movie easily?
 - Will our students never learn English well? Are they sad because they have studied English for many years and still can not speak English easily?
 It is our teachers' responsibility to improve the situation and to answer the above specific questions.
  - High schools want to create an environment of diversity and abundance; they also appreciate learning outside of class (from the environment and surrounding communities) as the classroom. Therefore, they need students with different interests and extracurricular activities to contribute to hundreds of clubs and programs at school. On the other hand, it is these comprehensive students who will make the most of the opportunities at university to grow not only studying but also society, culture and personality.
 - Extra-curricular activities are activities outside of the curriculum, which are more voluntary than mandatory. You can take part in extra-curricular activities in class/ school or society with a variety of options: Sports, Culture, Art, Volunteer, Organization ... Extracurricular activities play an important role in addition to the skills and life experience for you, help you become a more comprehensive and interesting person. Extra-curricular activities of English subject is not easy, teachers have to prepare many visual aids to help stimulate the curiosity and interest of students in this subject.
 3.1. Methods to create English effective extra-curricular activities:
 - To give the students selective subject or content limited by teachers. This creates attention for students on the ttopic and inspire students for lessons.
 - To introduce topics, contexts, situations, content related to the event: find out what students knew and not know about the content of the topic, curious intrigue, create excitement about content is about to discuss.
 -To explain some essential words and structures: However, you do not need to introduce all new word, so let students guess the meaning of the word in the context. If the students do not understand the meaning of the word, I will explain by definition or for example.
- To compose the requirements, tasks and specific roles of each extra activity.
- When conducting activities, the use of attached visual aids, paintings, illustrations, video, music or play the character of a story will be very good support for clarifying the context, suggesting the content of the discussion. Painting is a means of checking a student's level of comprehension.
- To proceed in three stages: before, during and after extracurricular activities. Divide the process into steps: for example: watching the video clip, then I divided into three parts:
- To discuss the main contents, answer questions, compare predictions.
- To view the details of that movie.
- To discussion and do according to my request of the clip just about.
- To find out the differences in the answers of pairs, groups and compare results, discuss after answer.
  - To ensure the quality of meeting.
 - Audio and video projectors are of good quality
  - Teachers work with average speed, accurate pronunciation, detailed and clear instructions.
3.2. Types of extracurricular activities.
    If you know how to control the time and with the right method to learn, you will have time for extra-curricular (extra-curricular) very attractive. Participation in these activities will help you to discover yourself, discover other qualities beyond the intelligent mind of learning. So, if you have never taken part, now is the time to  throw yourself out there  and discover yourself. Although not for the purpose of studying abroad, these activities will also help you a lot in life.

Type 1:
Game activity: You can participate in a traffic safety games, a team carried out according to the instructions of the other teame (by English) . Not necessary to have an achievement or award. So you can arrange training periods not too stressful to suit with your study schedule.
Game activity of class 11a5	 
Type 2:
Cultural performances: 	You are talented in singing, playing instruments or dancing break dancing, classical and participated performing at school or in the gala ... Cultural performances are usually very rich and does not require you to have extraordinary talent. For example, singing in a show does not require you to have a singer's vocals, you just have confidence to go on stage. Or break dancing does not have to be professional, let's practice with your friends to perform or just practice.

Type 3:
Activities organization - Leadership: You are Monitor, Vice monitor, secretary of the union, class secretary. These individual titles are persuasive for your leadership. However, it is not necessary to have a "title" so you can be a dynamic person, a leader. You can join the school delegation, organize parties, exchange programs among classes, blocks at school, These organizational tasks teach you how to work with planning, responsibility and ability to work in teams. Therefore, do not just join the fun, be the ones who make the fun.

Talent: You are good at design, you studied painting since childhood, you take music lessons, you play an instrument (guitar, piano, violin ...) very well. These exceptional talent differentiate you from the other "Applicant". With these talents, you will be very easy to "contribute to the campus" of the school in the future.
