Some suggested warm - Up activities applied for teaching English 10
In the globalization trend nowadays, English has been playing an important role in every aspect. Because of this, the demand for learning English is increasing more and more. Therefore, English is clearly considered to be one of the most important subjects at school. Being a teacher of English, I always raise this question: How to make the students interested in and learn well this subject- a forein language?
Throughout 10 years teaching English at the upper secondary school, I have concluded the experience that if students participate excitedly in the warm-up activities before going to the new lesson, the lesson will be considerably successful. So, how can we make it possible to get suitable and effective warm-up activities? This often takes a large amount of time when I plan each lesson. Fully undersanding these difficulties, I choose this writing report “Some suggested warm-up activities applied for teaching English 10”
Here I would like to share some experience to help teachers design and plan the lessons more effectively and less hard.

Reasons for choosing the research In the globalization trend nowadays, English has been playing an important role in every aspect. Fully undersanding these difficulties, I choose this writing report “Some suggested warm-up activities applied for teaching English 10” Here I would like to share some experience to help teachers design and plan the lessons more effectively and less hard. 1.2. Aims of the reseach: For the reasons given above, this research may give a clue to improve the quality of teaching and learning English, especially English 10. The research aim at: - Giving a more comprehensive outlook about English 10 - Providing basic knowledge about the role of the warm-up activites. - Suggesting warm-up activites that can be applied for lessons in English 10. 1.3. Objects of the research - Lessons in English 10 curriculum and the innovation of warm-up activities at Dinh Chuong Duong upper-secondary school are basic resources of this research. - The tactics to teach in the Pre-stages - The types of exercises in each activity - The number of activites in each warm-up part. - Students of grade 10 at Dinh Chuong Duong upper secondary school 1.4. Methods of the research - Reading reference books - Analyzing and discussing with other teachers - Applying in teaching, observing and drawing out experiences II. CONTENT 2.1. Rationale: By far, our communist party and the government have made education reform advocates, focused on teaching and learning English correctly. The goal of our general education is "Helping students develop fully in morality, physical intellectuality, aesthetic and basic skills, personal capabilities, dynamism and creativity, forming the real people of Socialist Vietnam, build personalities and responsibilities as citizens, prepare for students for further education or going into working life, contributing in the development and defense of the homeland". Education Law stipulates that "Educational methods have to promote active, self -discipline, initiative and creativity of students in accordance with the characteristics of the subject, the object characteristics of students, each classroom conditions, fostering students self-learning methods, collaborative capabilities, training skills to apply knowledge in practice, emotional impact, bringing joy, excitement and responsibility for students". In short, we should educate students fully, applying modern teaching methods, innovate teaching methods and know how to make the lessons be more lively, attract students’ attention and make them voluntarily participate in learning activitites, actively seek out knowledge and use that knowledge effectively. 2.2. Factual situation: English 10 was re-introduced from the shool year 2006-2007. Teaching and learning English have to innovate to meet the demand. After many years of applying new textbooks, especially English 10, I have found both advantages and disadvantages or difficulties for teachers and learners. +Advantages: English 10 has 16 units talking about 6 topics (You and me, Education, Community, Nature, Recreation and People and place). These topics are popular and suitable with the students’interest, knowledge and age. These themes not only elicit but also motivate and help students find information and discover more and more new nessessary things in genernal. Moreover, the Language Focus parts are designed suitably with most students’ knowledge level. For example, talking about wh-quetions, the lesson only requires students to recollect structures and how to choose wh-words. It is also undeniable to refer to the effect of the Glossary, from it the students can find out almost enough information about new and difficult words and phrases in each lesson. This helps students a lot to prepare a new lesson. + Disadvantages: There are some structures or idiom phrases that are fairely difficult for students. For example, in Unit 8: Make ends meet, meet one's wish ... In addition, in some periods of speaking and writing skill, lessons are boringly designed, not suitable with the whole topics. This causes difficulties for teachers in planning lessons. Some of the inconsiderable grammar points aslo make it hard for the teachers to plan the lessons in general. Realizing all of the advantages and disadvantages of the textbook English10, I together with many English teachers at Dinh Chuong Duong upper secondary school have to take it into considaration before planning each teaching lesson. And this research aslo aims at promoting advantages and reducing disadvantages in teaching English in general and English10 in particular. 2.3. Warm-up activities a. What are warm-up activities? Warm-up activities are short-term working activities (about 3 to 5 minutes) which are used to “break the iceberg” and "warm" the learning atmostphere up right from the beginning of the lesson. These activities are often simple but interesting enough to catch students’ attention and motivate them to learn the forein language effectively during the lesson. b. The purpose of warm-up activites in schools: Instead of starting the lesson usually by checking up the old lesson, teachers can use a variety of warm-up activites for different purposes. There are three main purposes when using these activities: * Warm up to start the lesson: to do this, the teacher can use the following activities: - Talk to and pick up some information from them. Take health, weather as examples - Ask students whether they remember the previous lesson: Where did we stop last time? - Give an idea or a comment on a specific student. (Oh, you look very beautiful today, Huong.) - Telling something about ourselves (Yesterday, my family had a good time together at Sam Son beach.) - Ect .... * Warm up to encourage and motivate the students to speak right from the beginning of the lesson. Here are some tips and suggested questions to help teachers get started: - What were you talking about when I came into the room? - What did you do last night? - What are your plans for this evening / the weekend ..? - What is in the news today? - What is new at home / at school / at work ...? - I think my watch is wrong. What is the exact time now? - What would you like to do today? - Ect ................... * Warm up to lead in: By applying the following activities, the teachers can both "warm" the classroom up and guide the students to the main content of the new lesson. - Use pictures - Tell a story - Play the record of a song or sing a song - Draw something not clear on board and get the students to guess - Have the students to think words or definitions related to the new lesson - Get the students to guess the content or topic of the lesson based on sugestions - Use realia - Hold a game for students to play - Ect ............ c. Rules when using warm-up activities: - The teachers have to prepare carefully before the teaching period. This means the teachers must know the aims and the procedure clearly. - Activities must be short, simple - Activities should be interesting, exciting - Activities should be based on student's ability - Activities should be various in order not to make the students bored 2.4. Analysis of the results of the survey on the effect of warm-up activites with students in grade 10 at Dinh Chuong Duong upper secondary school: To find out how effective the warm-up activities are for learning and learning, I conducted a small survey from students in class 10A1 and 10A2. Basing on the results, I have more encouragement to write this report. According to the results of the survey, 90% of students support the warm-up activities and more than 80% realize that these activities bring them the excitement and good mood before learning the new lesson. Approximately 5% left are in favour of checking old lesson as tradition or like other activities. Thus, it is clear that warm-up activities have brought remarkable effects to learners. The students feel the lesson more meaningful and interesting. They find English more interesting than other subjects which get started by checking up the previous lesson. Table of results of the survey: Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 Q5 Q6 A 10,3% 0% 14,6% 8,5% 46% 60% B 87,7% 0% 30% 69,5% 52% 20,7% C 0% 0% 40% 20% 2% 15% D 0% 100% 15,4% 2% 0% 4,3% 2.5.
